Dylan J. Edwards, PhD Professor

Dr. Edwards leads the Moss Rehabilitation Research Institute (MRRI), of 10 Laboratories in Translational Neurorehabilitation science, which is part of a U.S. News and World Report top rehabilitation hospital, MossRehab in Philadelphia. This follows from his work in New York leading a long-standing collaboration he orchestrated in 2007, between Harvard Medical School and Massachusetts Institute of Technology in Boston, and Burke-Cornell Neurological Institute in New York, to bridge engineering, neurology, and rehabilitation medicine. This cross-disciplinary collaboration led to over a decade of extramural funding in studies of human motor recovery in stroke, spinal cord injury, and adult cerebral palsy. This work resulted in scientific advancements in rehabilitation outcome predictors, non-invasive brain stimulation techniques, rehabilitation robotics, in method as well as application. Dr. Edwards has led local teams in New York and Philadelphia during multi-site national and international clinical trials in Neurorehabilitation, and has a track-record in inpatient and outpatient-based research.

Dr. Edwards is recognized as a leader in the US in the field of Neurorehabilitation, having served two terms (6 years) on the board of directors, and recently the strategic planning committee, for the American Society for Neurorehabilitation. Dr. Edwards is a thought leader in aiming to enhance defined behavioral treatments in the motor domain, systematically evaluating effects of combinatorial therapies (brain stimulation supplement to behavioral therapy). Dr. Edwards has published in the domains of complex data analysis (brain stimulation mapping methods); patient specification (cross domain effects motor / speech in stroke; sub-clinical connection in spinal cord injury), and precisely defined physical treatments (using standardized robotic therapy). Dr. Edwards co-directed a successful Continuing Medical Education course at Harvard Medical School for a decade (2008 - 2018) in Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation and has served as an invited reviewer for federal competitive grants in the United States (NIH, NIDILRR), Canada, Europe, New Zealand, and Australia. Dr. Edwards has given invited lectures at the United States National Academy of Medicine; served on Data Safety Monitoring Boards of NIH funded studies; was invited as a speaker at the NIH on scientific rigor (non-invasive brain stimulation, NIBS); was invited to the international technical training standards committee for NIBS (International Federation for Clinical Neurophysiology), and has been an invited expert on rehabilitation robotics to the US Food and Drug Administration.
