Luanne Thorndyke leads the UMMS Office of Faculty Affairs, and oversees all matters related to faculty, including faculty recruitment and hiring, faculty orientation/onboarding and professional development; academic affairs (appointment, promotion & tenure), campus governance and committees; leadership development; gender and equity issues. She is a board-certified internist and geriatrician, with a special interest in women’s health, with experience as a medical entrepreneur, medical director, and physician executive in public, private, and academic health system settings. Thorndyke is a graduate of Duke University (BA) and the University of Nebraska College of Medicine (MD), completing internal medicine residency at Pennsylvania Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania. She joined the Penn State College of Medicine, serving as Assistant Dean for Continuing Medical Education and later Associate Dean for Professional Development before transitioning to UMass. Scholarly interests include professional and leadership development, mentoring, advancement of women, faculty well-being, resilience and vitality. She has published and presented nationally and internationally on these topics and is a highly sought-after speaker. She chaired the AAMC Group on Faculty Affairs (2012-13), led the development and implementation of a strategic plan for the organization, and created a new member mentoring program that continues today. She is part of the faculty for the Executive Leadership in Academic Medicine (ELAM) program since 2012, leading the ELAM curriculum related to the Institutional Action Project (IAP). Thorndyke has received multiple campus-wide and national awards for her work, including the Elizabeth Blackwell Award from the American Medical Women’s Association, the Individual Leadership Award from the AAMC Group on Women in Medicine and Science, the Outstanding Mentor Award from the UMMS Women’s Faculty Committee, the Carol J. Bland Phronesis Award from the AAMC GFA, and the Women’s Leadership Award from the Massachusetts Medical Society.
