Jonathan Carlson, MD is an interventional pain specialist, who is ABMS double-board certified in Anesthesiology and Pain Management. He is currently in private practice in Hawaii and is founder of Hawaii Pain & Spine. He treats a wide variety of chronic pain disorders and has a strong interest and focus in advanced pain interventions such as neuraxial spine and peripheral nerve radiofrequency ablation, vertebral augmentation, interspinous process spacers, DRG stimulation, peripheral nerve stimulation, spinal cord stimulation, percutaneous sacral fusion, and lumbar endoscopic discectomy. Dr Carlson also enjoys educating on a myriad of different topics within pain management. He has been a clinical associate professor at Midwestern College of Medicine and has been a faculty at several national pain society meetings such as North American Neuromodulation Society (NANS), American Society of Pain and Neuroscience (ASPN), American Society of Regional Anesthesia (ASRA), AZSIPP, CalSIPP, NY/NJSIPP, FSIPP, WVSIPP, Kauai Pain Conference, and The Business of Pain. He has authored several peer-reviewed journal publications, text book chapters, and has been principal investigator in several landmark research studies. The scope has been with best practices for opioid management and advanced procedures for chronic pain such as SCS, DRG, PNS/PFNS, interspinous spacers for lumbar spinal stenosis, percutaneous direct lumbar decompression, sacral fusion, and lumbar endoscopic discectomy. He is the National Treasurer and Executive Board Member for the American Society of Pain and Neurosciences (ASPN). He is on the board of the Pacific Spine and Pain Society. He is the immediate past president of AZSIPP. Dr. Carlson received his medical degree at the University of Oklahoma. He did his residency in anesthesiology at the University of California-Davis. He then completed an interventional pain management ACGME fellowship at Texas Tech University. He was fortunate to be trained under Dr. Gabor Racz, one of the fathers of the pain specialty.
